Defective Earplugs Sold To U.S. Military

Between 2003 and 2015, the Minnesota-based company 3M sold millions of dual-ended Combat Arms Earplugs to the U.S. military without disclosing that they were defective. In a settlement reached with the Department of Justice, the U.S. government alleged that 3M and its predecessor, Aearo Technologies, Inc., knew that the earplugs were too short for proper insertion into the ear, which could cause them to gradually loosen so that they did not provide sufficient noise protection.
